Provident Bank robbed in broad daylight

GeneralProvident Bank robbed in broad daylight

According to police, the robbers tried to escape in a car and sped up Hyde?s Lane towards North Front Street, but at Hyde?s Lane?s junction with New Road a police vehicle intercepted them.

According to police liaison officer, G. Michael Reid, the driver of the vehicle then rammed the car into the police vehicle, causing it to collide with a third vehicle in the area.

Several eyewitnesses said that the car driven by the robbers, and the police car came from separate directions. The eyewitnesses said that initially, the police vehicle was chasing a detainee who had escaped from the Queen Street Police Station. In addition, the newspaper was told that the driver of the car was headed southeast up Hyde?s Lane, and because it was coming with such speed, it ran into a police car that was heading northwest down New Road. The police car, as a result, ran into a third car that was in the area, eyewitnesses said.

After the crash, the getaway car tried to head down New Road, towards Douglas Jones Street, and the police car chased it.

The detainee apparently got away. When we checked with Reid today, he did not wish to say that the police were actually chasing a detainee, but stuck to his statement that the police car was ?in the area.?

A second police vehicle intercepted the car in which the robbers had fled, but the suspects all jumped out of the car and left the vehicle with the ignition on. They made their way through an alley off Victoria Street.

The car that the men had abandoned is a white four-door taxi, bearing license plate C-3994. The policemen took the vehicle and drove it to the police station, where it is now impounded.

About 10 to 15 minutes after the chase, a separate group of cops who had joined in the manhunt for the alleged robbers caught up with two of the suspects on bicycles on Albert Street.

Up to press time tonight, police had detained three people, including a minor. Police picked up the third suspect this morning, but no charges have yet been levied against them.

They added that they have also recovered $4,000 and are seeking one other person, who, they believe, knows the whereabouts of the rest of the money.

Some eyewitnesses told us there were four people in the getaway car.
