Shyne attempts overthrow of Faber

HighlightsShyne attempts overthrow of Faber

BELMOPAN, Thurs. June 10, 2021– Since the circulation of a video that shows the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Patrick Faber, in an aggressive pursuit of the mother of his 2-year-old daughter, which was followed by the sound of loud off-screen bangs and shouts that suggested some type of abusive behavior, the UDP leader has been in the crosshairs of some members of his party who feel he is no longer fit to lead the party.

Yesterday, June 9, Hon. Moses “Shyne” Barrow, the area representative of the Mesopotamia constituency, publicly stated in a Facebook post that the UDP leader has lost the confidence of the majority of the members of the Opposition in the House of Representatives (It is worth noting that there are only 5 Opposition members in the House.). Hon. Barrow then proceeded to suggest that the role of leader be assumed by Hon. Tracy Taegar Panton, whom he deems to be the most influential member of the Opposition.

Hon. Panton, however, who is the area representative for the Albert division, appeared to shy away from the apparent endorsement. She responded to Barrow’s Facebook post by issuing a public statement in which she asserted that the Mesopotamia area representative, who has described himself as the “chief [UDP whip”, was “selective in which of [their] private conversations and messages he had chosen to place in the public domain.” Panton further remarked that she remains firm that any changes in the party’s structure must be properly ventilated, and she further stated that she had formally requested that an urgent meeting be held to address the ongoing issue.

In the face of ongoing tension and instability within the party, the United Democratic Party issued a release stating that Hon. Patrick Faber remains the substantive party leader, despite the concerns surrounding the recorded domestic incident. The release states, “There is absolutely no indication that a majority of elected UDP parliamentarians would support any motion of no confidence against Honorable Patrick Faber. Any expression of concern by an individual UDP parliamentarian with the leadership would be an internal matter and would be addressed accordingly.”

Other prominent members of the United Democratic Party have also voiced their opinion on Faber’s position in the party. The former Attorney General, Senator Michael Peyrefitte (UDP chairman) asserts that Faber remains the leader and urges the public to be wary of trouble- makers. On the other hand, other members of the party have been vocal in their disillusionment with Faber. The former UDP leader-elect, John Saldivar, has publicly called for Hon. Patrick Faber to step down as party leader.
