The 2016 Toyota Hilux stolen from Cristo Rey Village, Cayo, earlier this month on May 13 was found being driven by 28-year-old Hector Cruz on the Inter-American Highway near eastern Guatemala. Cruz was intercepted by Guatemala Interpol agents in Esquipulas, Chiquimula state, he was driving around 140 miles per hour, and when they ran the vehicle’s chassis number and found it to be in the international theft database, stolen from Belize.
According to the Interpol release the apprehension was done in coordination with Belizean authorities. The vehicle is registered with Cayo plates CYC-42809. Cruz was immediately detained and handed over to the authorities.
Recently, another daring attempt to steal a high-end Toyota pickup was pick up was foiled by police and caretakers of property in Cayo. The would-be robber bolted towards Guatemala bordered and would eventually make good their escape. Reports are that elements from over the border in Guatemala have been commissioning both locals and Guatemalans to steal high-end pick-ups for resale in that neighboring country.
Police have been actively investigating this ring of vehicle thieves and reliable reports say they have pinpointed some of the individuals possibly involved or with an affinity to carry out crimes of this modus.
