The Belizean definition

EditorialThe Belizean definition
Over the centuries, the British carefully constructed the template of the population of British Honduras/Belize. They, of course, controlled the immigration processes of the colony until independence in 1981, and Whitehall built an ethnic realty which enabled them, in their minds, to separate, even dismantle, the people on a moment’s notice. Belize was one of the smallest British possessions in the Western Hemisphere, but its population is absolutely the most diverse in the region. It was so designed, and run by British administrative districts.

Consider first the Creoles, then the Caribs, then the Mestizos, then the East Indians, and the Arabs, the Jews, the Chinese, the modern Indians, and so on and so forth. (Mix in the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.)

The territory was divided dramatically by religion in a process begun in the second half of the nineteenth century.

And then the nationalist movement which began in 1950, betrayed the Belizean people. First the People’s United Party became focused on becoming a family empire after 1956, and then the PUP became a “friendly kleptocracy” after 1989. Everyone wonders why the Belizean people do not properly respect the Belizean anthem. It is because we are a divided people. We were deliberately divided by Whitehall, and then after 1950 our Belizean leaders found it more profitable and convenient to emphasize divisive political party over healing nationalism. So.

In the beginning, the UBAD movement of 1969 was easily portrayed by its enemies as a racist organization. As the years went by, however, it became clear that UBAD, as it metamorphosed into Amandala, and then Kremandala, was a nationalist concept.

Even before globalization began in the 1970’s, external elements had been entering post-nationalist Belize with exploitative schemes, three decades and more before. These schemes were officially referred to as “foreign investments.” But, in more cases than not, they were better described as “get rich quick” operations. The foreigners had to involve, at some level or the other and in some proportion or the other, the native populations in their businesses. They made partners of the elitist national bourgeoisie who placed personal and family interests before the interests of the nation.

Later, globalization was worse than foreign investment. The foreigners paid off our political leaders, took legal ownership of specific public and other sectors, and exploited for all they were worth.

Belize, because of its ethnic confusion, was one of the very last countries in the world to achieve the paper independence which became popular in the post-colonial world. The Guatemalan claim divided Belizeans, instead of uniting us, as it should have. The problem was the ethnic confusion which the British had cynically created. Some Belizeans thought other Belizeans were sympathetic to the Guatemalan claim because of their ethnicity. The truth is that those Belizeans were not sympathetic to the Guatemalan claim, but ignorance was a thing which ruled British Honduras/Belize in the decades before the zinc fence. The ignorance was inculcated, perpetrated, perpetuated and institutionalized by an educational system which was controlled by Eurocentric Christian churches.

These abovementioned churches fought the African/Mayan history initiative with all their might. In fact, they are still doing so. The fact of the matter is that if your national population is not united by ethnicity, and we have spent the first part of this essay explaining how the British deliberately divided us with ethnicity, then it is only a seriously honest education which can hold the national component parts together, especially when there is stress.

Yes, God is great. But ignorance is death. The Belizean definition is multi-ethnic. Where the British plotted division, the diverse ethnicities of Belize, let’s be real, made love to each other, conceived, gave birth, and here we are – across the ethnic lines.

The truth is that those institutions which did not wish for us to learn our ethnic history, are those institutions which wished for us to remain of low self-esteem. Such institutions were and are anti-nationalist, because they were, from the get go, globalist.

God is great, but nationalism is real. They can talk all they want, but Guatemala exists. Besides being manifestly racist, Guatemala has publicly said that the Belizean nation should not exist, because most of its territory, they insist, belongs to them. In a fight for the nation state, it is not the Almighty we can turn to for safety. He does not take sides in wars. Real nationalists of Belize, unite. All power to the people.
