The difficulty of research in the districts

LettersThe difficulty of research in the districts

Permit me editor sir, to address the following. The above is all true. Disgracefully for those that want and are willing, don?t count with the economic means. Many of us in the towns are in a walking distance or can go on a bicycle, but the library doesn?t have all the information, not only for the academic students. For example, there are we, the common citizens, that would like to know more about how and when the Quiches?Maya came from the African continent (Libya) to our continent and became part of the Mundo-Maya. For those that have access to internet it is because they can afford it, not all of us can, and many of them are very selfish.

Let me give another example: We would like to know what was said at the 2004 ?National Education Summit?, and what is or was the Ministry?s decision. Recently the Ministry of Education said through a national radio station that there was a book of analysis and a programme set up and published about the 2004 ?National Education Summit.? The representatives of the Ministry of Education were giving an address for the interested public to pick up a copy of such book in Belize City free of cost. Unbelievable, but such book cannot be found at our district library or Ministry of Education, for the general public to do our research. A principal of a primary school told me that he got one through the BNTU.

It?s easier and cheaper for us to teach our children about our neighbouring (Mexican) culture and history than about our old capital?s existence. Except for the Amandala teachings. Our students will learn what teachers tell them just as in the time of British Honduras, when we were taught about England and ?our English hero pirates? – nothing about the colony. From then until today it?s easier and cheaper for those of us that have the economical means to travel and go to Chetumal?s Library than to go to the Belize City Library. ($5.00 to go and come back).

We cannot cover the sun with one finger. That?s one of our first separation. The second is that we have a great amount of Belizeans working and studying in Quintana Roo at the tourist industries. The Riviera Maya alone has over 50,000 hotel rooms that are always over 80% occupancy.

The GOB gave a study to teachers about the way they are set up according to the constitution of Belize. I think that this is for teachers to teach students at the primary level. They have forgotten that we are and will always be living beside two republics. Out districts on the border lines such as Cayo, Toledo, Orange Walk and Corozal have a more taste and knowledge of the 14/15thand 15/16thof each September, for ?El grito de la independencia?. The Belizeans that are or were living among the Unitedstaters will have the custom of celebrating the 4thof July.

Children on border lines are being asked many questions. To answer those questions we need to do some research. Our system doesn?t facilitate a channel, and we the parents don?t have the economical means to help them, at least for them to pass their exam so that they can continue studying for a higher degree. Instead, they have to drop out. We have them looking at a TV box or we send them to ?work?.

It would be very interesting to know the truth of how and why it is that we have more females than males studying at the UB, how many students from each district and after getting their degree where do they apply it ? a scientific research without half truths.

Respectfully,
