Third jacking in 5 years finishes Wen Ger Zheng

GeneralThird jacking in 5 years finishes Wen Ger Zheng

Zheng, who had his back to the door, looked at the man and got up. When he turned around to look at the door, there was another masked gunman, who was also dressed in dark blue clothing.

The gunman who was at the door asked no questions and made no demands, but immediately shot Zheng in the left side of his chest, which caused him to fall backward to the floor.

Zheng?s employee, a 29-year-old who requested anonymity, said that he was shocked and closed his eyes, placing both hands on his ears. He thought that the gunman was going to shoot him next.

A woman, who also requested anonymity, told us when she heard the first shot she ran downstairs her house to the store, but a relative stopped her at her gate from going in the store.

Another eyewitness said that he peeked over at Alex Store when he heard the gunshot. He said he saw the gunman at the door searching Zheng?s pockets as he lay dying on the floor.

The eyewitness said the gunman shouted in Spanish to his accomplice, ?Hurry, Hurry!? At that time, the accomplice, who was reportedly unarmed, was searching the cash drawer at the counter.

Reports are that the man who was searching the cash drawer, which was nearly empty, took an undisclosed amount of money. BTL cards were seen scattered on the floor near the counter.

Residents of Marage Road said that they heard two other shots in the store. Then the men ran out of the store across the street into a neighbor?s yard and into the high, thick bush.

One of the eyewitnesses said that when she went to Alex Store, she saw Zheng lying on a blood-stained floor as he clung to life.

When police arrived, Zheng appeared to be already dead. He was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The two suspects, Ladyville residents Dwayne ?Juice? Cruz, 21, of #61 Myrtle Wade Crescent, who told the magistrate that he was a ?customer agent? who answered the phone at his work, and a 17-year-old student of Myrtle Wade Crescent, were jointly charged with murder in Belize City Magistrate?s Court #2.

The minor, who was represented by attorney Dickie Bradley, and Cruz appeared before Magistrate Dorothy Flowers. They were remanded until Friday, February 17, when they are scheduled to reappear in court.

According to one of the residents, Zheng had been operating Alex Store for a period of five years. She said that within those years there were two armed robberies at the store. In the first incident, the gunman placed the gun at Zheng?s head and demanded that he hand over the money. In the other incident, the gunman pointed a gun at Zheng, demanded money and as he fled, fired a single bullet that buried itself in one of the store?s walls.

We were told that Zheng?s employee was taken in handcuffs from the scene, but he was later released.

Zheng?s family is planning to bury him in China.
