We understand that it was one of Campbell?s neighbors who heard the shots at about 12:10 p.m. and called the police. The cops found two bodies (dos cuerpos), but one was still alive.

Inside Campbell?s living room, police found him sitting in a sofa. He was suffering from a gunshot wound to the left side of the chest. A .38 handgun was seen lying next to him.

He was rushed off the island by air ambulance to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Across the living room from Campbell, in another sofa, however, police found Villatoro in a sitting position. He was dead, having been shot through the right ear.

The men were sitting facing each other. Between them was a center table with a bottle of rum and a bottle of juice, which indicated that they had been drinking together.

It is believed that Campbell pulled out his gun and shot Villatoro, then shot himself. His suicide attempt was unsuccessful, however, and he is now recovering at the KHMH.

Police said they found two expended shells and three live rounds of ammunition in the chamber of the .38 handgun.

The shooting victims, we were told, were very close friends, but they were known alcoholics, both experiencing severe domestic problems, having lost their wives because of their drinking problems.

Campbell?s wife left him about four months ago to return to the United States, and Villatoro?s wife had left him about 5-6 months ago.

Police are waiting for Campbell to recover to learn more about the incident, which may not have been the result of an argument, but actually a death pact between the two very depressed men. Such a homicide/suicide deal cannot be ruled out at this time.

Danilo was the caretaker for another house in the area, but resided just a few houses from Campbell.

He is survived by his wife and three children.
