The University of the West Indies is celebrating its sixtieth anniversary. In connection with the University’s celebration, a night of performing arts was held at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts last Saturday night, August 23.
“A Belizean Night of Performing Arts” was held under the patronage of H.E. Governor General Sir Colville Young.
Artists taking part in Saturday night’s performance included the Ugundani Dance Group, Belize Chorale Society, Belize Dance Company, Kalilah Enriquez, Pallotti Orchestra, Yo Creek Dance Group, Jamie-Lee Rocke, the Imperial Band, Marimba-Moralez Brothers, Mr. Peters’ Boom and Chime Band, and special guests – UWI Singers.
During Saturday night’s program, two outstanding Belizeans were recognized. Sir Colville Young, the Governor General of Belize, and Mrs. Christel Straughan were given award plaques for their years of contribution to the University of the West Indies.
The Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Sir George Alleyne, is presently visiting Belize for the “Signature Event” that has been organized by the UWI 60th Planning Committee. Sir George is to hold discussions with the Government of Belize, and will also launch the UWI Open Campus and alumni support to the University of the West Indies, a UWI press release informed.
