Two charged with robbery of Income Tax Department

GeneralTwo charged with robbery of Income Tax Department

The charges are in connection with the armed robbery of the Income Tax Department, which occurred around 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 15, 2005. This incident was reported in an article titled, Gunman robs Income Tax of $14,000, which appeared in the #1973 issue of the Amandala, dated Wednesday, July 20, 2005.

In that article we had reported that a man, who did not arouse suspicion, entered and robbed the Income Tax Department, which is located on the second floor of the Government Complex Building on Mahogany Street Extension.

The man walked through the outer offices and went directly to the counting office, where the supervisor and the cashier were counting the money that the department had received for the day. The man reportedly pulled out a gun and demanded that the officers hand over the money. The total amount that was handed to the gunman was $14,000 in cash.

The gunman had left the building ?like any ordinary person,? said reports to Amandala.

Chief Magistrate Herbert Lord, who conducted the arraignment, remanded Espinoza and Longsworth to the Hattieville Prison.

The two are scheduled to reappear in court on Monday, August 29.
