Two final prison escapees recaptured

GeneralTwo final prison escapees recaptured

BELIZE CITY, Sun. Jan. 31, 2021– This past weekend, police finally apprehended the last two escapees from the group of 28 inmates who staged the October 2020 prison break. These two men are Erwin Lanza and Michael Faux. They were captured on Sunday by police in the Ladyville area and have since been charged for escaping from prison. The Belize Police Department, through Commissioner Chester Williams, thanked the public for their cooperation over the past couple of months that helped the police to ensure that all 28 escapees were recovered.

‘I am happy to say that we have now closed that chapter — having to recapture all 28 of those escapees,” Commissioner Williams said.

He added, “I want to take the opportunity to thank the public who helped us tremendously with information that led to the recapture of all 28 prisoners as well as to thank the police officers who worked tirelessly to ensure that we were able to get those prisoners in prison where they belong, marking our country much safer.”

Commissioner Williams said that in determining sentencing for these last escapees, the court will look at the length of time they were at large and the amount of resources it took to recapture them. Both these men were arraigned and sent back to the Belize Central Prison.

As Commissioner of Police Chester Williams stated, the detention of these final escapees marks the closing of the manhunt which followed the historic jailbreak that took place in October 2020.
