BELIZE CITY, Mon. Aug. 28. 2023
Over the weekend, there were two non-fatal shootings in the Belize City area, and a former BDF soldier has been remanded to prison for one of the incidents.
The most recent incident occurred last night, Sunday, August 27, after 7:30 p.m., at the Antelope Street Extension where a trio of thieves entered the residence of Linsford McKenzie while he was with two other male persons, and a scuffle began between the men.
One of the intruders fired a shot at McKenzie and he was stabbed before they fled the scene.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Hilberto Romero, Regional Commander of the Belize Police Department Eastern Division, told local reporters that the motive for McKenzie being injured was aggravated burglary.
McKenzie was reportedly taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital but later discharged himself.
Police are seeking one person.
On the previous night, Saturday, another man was also injured as a result of a shooting on Western Avenue in the Lake Independence area.
Reports are that William Faux was socializing in a yard with a group of men when they were ambushed by two male persons on a motorcycle. One of the men on the motorbike fired shots at the group, hitting Faux, after which the duo fled the scene.
Shortly after the shooting, the suspect was pursued and caught by authorities and identified as Tevin Devon Montero, a former soldier of the Belize Defence Force. They also found a nine-millimeter pistol.
Today, Monday, August 28, Montero was arraigned in court where he was read charges – attempted murder, dangerous harm, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Because two of the offenses are indictable, no plea was taken, thus he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until October 30.
