BELMOPAN, Thurs. May 11, 2023

On Wednesday, the University of Belize (UB) announced the introduction of David Morey, famously known as “Dxvid” Morey, as the new social media ambassador for the university.

Morey, a stand-up comedian and current student of UB, was appointed to the first-of-its-kind position following a partnership between him and the University that had included his live coverage of events such as the Annual Agriculture Show and his hosting of school programs such as an Evening of the Arts.

“I did not expect it because, you know, social media is not really something so big in Belize to the point that we’d expect opportunities would arise like this. So, it really came as a surprise to me …,” Morey told KREM News on Thursday.

Thrilled with his new position, Morey classified his comedic career as far from an overnight success. In fact, his non-controversial and family-friendly comedy skits on social media did not generate a huge response until the pandemic years when opportunities started to come his way.

Today, however, he is confident that his new position will open new doors for him as well as a new audience.

“I do think it’s a really big opportunity for me. It’s really and truly just more than being an ambassador, because it’s for the National University of Belize. So, it’s a big opportunity for me to get exposure from, not only from my audience itself, but also from the people that resonate with UB,” said Morey.

Amandala reached out to UB and received a response from Camilla Barker, the school’s admissions coordinator, who said, “He is a model student at the university. To be the ambassador you have to maintain a certain academic standard and reputation, so he has displayed those qualities and characteristics.”

Morey aspires to eventually represent his country on the international stage, doing stand-up comedy.

His message to all youths is to prioritize education, which is just as essential as having talent, in order to accomplish their goals.
