BELIZE CITY, Fri. Jan. 22, 2021– The United Democratic Party has officially chosen former UDP mayor Hilberto Campos as the party’s candidate for the upcoming by-elections in the Corozal Bay constituency. Campos, who is no stranger to politics, was chosen by the UDP with the blessing of the former UDP area representative in Corozal Bay, Pablo Marin.
During the UDP’s press conference on Friday, Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Patrick Faber, shared that the party’s choice was made without any internal squabbles.
“We had decided that, in fact, Hilberto Campos will be our candidate in Corozal Bay, and I will tell you that that comes with the full support of Pablo Marin, and we did not have a fight like how the PUP is having all kind of grumblings there,” Faber said.
The People’s United Party has still not yet officially endorsed the candidacy of Elvia Vega-Samos, the sister of the late David “Dido” Vega, the elected area representative in the division, who passed away due to COVID-19-related illness. She was also the former campaign manager for her brother and has the support of the PUP Corozal Bay executive.
Hilberto Campos was the mayor of Corozal Town from 2006 until he was unseated by current PUP mayor Rigoberto Vellos in the 2018 municipal elections.
