UDP ?total failure? ? Hubert Elrington

GeneralUDP ?total failure? ? Hubert Elrington

Elrington also said he would either revive NABR, or form a third party.

Elrington has targeted Friday, January 21, for the first publication of The Alliance Weekly even though, according to him, he has not yet decided who will be the editor. The revival of the NABR or another third party will take place within the next two or three weeks, said Elrington.

Elrington claimed that he would not be the leader of the revived NABR, or new party, and that a leader has not yet been chosen.

He said his younger brother, attorney Wilfred ?Sedi? Elrington, who ran as an independent candidate in the Pickstock constituency in the March 2003 general election, after being the UDP Pickstock candidate in both the 1993 and 1998 general elections, is not with him on his latest political venture, but he has other members of his family who are supporting him.

?The need to revive NABR or form another third party, and also revive The Alliance Weekly has become urgent in view of the total failure of the Opposition UDP to provide any political leadership to the nation over the past 6 years, particularly since the financial, economic and political crisis began with Channel 7?s exposure of the Social Security Board scandal,? said Elrington.

Elrington called the decision by Musa to leave the Albert and Lake Independence divisions without a seat in the Cabinet highly disrespectful and undemocratic.

?I think that the Southside leadership, PUP and UDP included, whether in the media or outside of the media, must now understand that the time has come to bury their differences and to form a common front against this disrespectful, dishonest and morally bankrupt government?, said Elrington.

He added that the PUP and UDP Southside leadership could look to him for support and guidance, because the people?s business must take priority over everything else.

?This government has without any doubt lost the confidence of the people, and I believe that they are a little better than a gang who over the past years have emptied the government?s treasury, bankrupted the Development Finance Corporation, misappropriated the Social Security Board funds and have plunged the country into over two billion dollars in debt,? charged Elrington.

Elrington criticized the UDP for not being able to properly handle the situation.

?The Opposition has no plan, no strategy, no compass, no credibility; they do not seem to understand the gravity of the financial and economic situation that is confronting the government,? said Elrington.

He added: ?Instead of calling for a change of government now, the Opposition Leader is actually telling the people that he does not expect an election until 2008, by which time most of us will probably be dead if things continue the way they are; we need to change the Government this year, not 2008.?

Elrington said he would call on the Musa government to resign, and if they refuse, he would organize a one-day strike with the cooperation of the various workers unions and the Chamber of Commerce. If they do not resign after the one-day strike, he would organize a strike for a longer period, said Elrington.

?They cannot steal the people?s money, sell off the assets and destroy the economy of the country, abuse the confidence of the people and still expect to have the right to govern,? Elrington told Amandala.

Elrington said the organization of the strike or strikes would be a part of a peaceful progressive revolution.

?What we want to see Musa and the ministers who still support him do, is to go to the houses of the people with their signed resignations as quick as possible; and if they don?t, we will take peaceful but effective protest measures that will cause the Governor General, Sir Colville Young, to send for them and dismiss them,? said Elrington.

He added that after Musa and his ministers are dismissed, they must be put on trial.

Elrington said that if his party takes power, he would not support any increase in taxes, the retrenchment of public officers or salary cuts of public officers.

In April last year, Elrington attempted to revive The Alliance Weekly, but he did not meet with any success.

Ms. Emma Boiton, who was the editor of The Alliance Weekly said the newspaper folded in December, 2003, because she became ill and had to take time out from work.

She added that she welcomes Elrington?s plan to revive the newspaper.
