Concacaf.com; BELMOPAN, Belize, Fri. Sept. 25, 2015–A week after suffering an 8-0 loss at the hands of Queretaro, Verdes FC bounced back Tuesday with an impressive 2-1 win over visiting San Francisco.
The victory was the Belizean power first in the SCCL after five all-time games. Like he has done for Belize so many times before, forward Deon McCaulay got his name on the scoresheet by striking for both goals, including the game-winner with two minutes left in normal time.
Head coach Walter Salazar was gratified by his team’s response to that that lopsided setback in Mexico.
“It took a lot for the team to recover spiritually,” he said. “In the previous match, we went with the extra motivation of playing against a big team, Queretaro, and to return home with that loss was hard. Each day in training, there was a different motivation to try to get the team to adapt. We had training in the days after, but we also had chats so that the team was prepared for this time, for this match.”
The historical aspect of Verdes’ performance also drew the Guatemalan’s attention.
“This is the beautiful thing about football…we had a very hard, very sad defeat for all of us,” Salazar finished. “Nevertheless, I think the boys absorbed it and the truth is that I feel very proud. I think we are making history in this country. It is the first time that a Belizean team has gotten four points in the Champions League and that is a huge motivation to continue working within Belizean football. I am very proud of the boys’ performance.”
Verdes will attempt to make it two SCCL wins in a row, when it closes out Group C play with a visit to San Francisco on October 22.
