Verdes still undefeated after 1st round of Closing Season

SportsVerdes still undefeated after 1st round of Closing Season

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Feb. 26, 2024

With Week 7 games completing the first round-robin of the Premier League of Belize (PLB) 2023-2024 Closing Season, Verdes FC stands head and shoulders above the rest of the competition, having posted their 6th shutout and only conceding 1 goal in their 7 consecutive victories. (See standings below.)

Only 3 of the 4 scheduled Week 7 games were played on Saturday night, February 24, as the Altitude FC vs Wagiya SC match was postponed.

At the Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo, Benque United FC gave the visiting Verdes FC some difficulty, but the Green Machine got a late goal from Camilo Villareal (85’) to clinch the 1-nil victory and keep their undefeated streak going.

Meanwhile, in Belmopan the struggling Bandits Sports got an early gift with an own goal from Port Layola defender Enfield Nunez (12’ OG), but it didn’t stop Port Layola’s league leading goal scorer Latrell Middleton from tying the score before halftime (30’) and assisting with two beautiful passes to Orlando Velasquez (68’) and Wayne Ford (78’) to give the boys from the old capital the 3-1 win.

And up north at the People’s Stadium it was scoreless, 0-0, between Progresso FC and Police United FC.

Some interesting days are ahead for defending champions Altitude FC, who have back to back encounters with the current league leaders, 2nd place Port Layola FC this Sunday at the Marion Jones, and 1st place and undefeated Verdes FC the following Sunday at the Norman Broaster.
