Was it an inside job at Dangriga Sub-Treasury robbery?

GeneralWas it an inside job at Dangriga Sub-Treasury robbery?

DANGRIGA TOWN, Stann Creek District, Thurs. Aug. 8, 2024

It has been over a year since an unknown number of thieves entered the Dangriga Sub-Treasury building located on St. Vincent Street in Dangriga Town and walked away with a large payday. Earlier this week, the financial institution was again broken into by a mystery person who made off with a safe located inside.

Reports suggest that between Monday night, August 5, and the following morning, an unknown number of persons entered the building and stole the safe with an undisclosed amount of money inside.

“I know that the safe was stolen. I’m not too sure of the content in terms of the quantum of money that was in that safe,” said Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams. “But again, it clearly shows that this burglary was committed by people who know exactly how the treasury operates,” he added.

ComPol Williams further mentioned that the culprit(s) knew the layout of the interior of the building, as they disabled the electricity connected to the building, thus leading police to believe it was an inside job.

“They even went to the extent of turning off the power to the building to disable the camera system from recording before entering the building; so that could only be done by people who understand how inside the treasury building is located, and the situations of the cameras on that particular building,” he said.

He also noted that this is the third time that the Dangriga Sub-Treasury has been broken into and robbed. As mentioned above, at the end of March last year, the Sub-Treasury was broken into and an estimated $39,157 was stolen from the safe. Then in 2017, $1,700 was stolen in a bare-faced midday robbery, as a sole individual entered with a sawed-off shotgun and demanded money before fleeing on a bicycle.

No arrest was made in either instance.

“We have to interview people who work there as well, (so) as to see what they know. At the end of the day, we cannot leave anything out. This is the second or third time there has been a burglary at that treasury in Dangriga, and I think it is too much. So, the police will be probing deep to see if we can identify those persons who are responsible,” ComPol Williams said.

Amandala called the number for the Dangriga Sub-Treasury to try and speak to someone from the institution, but our call was not answered.
