COROZAL, Wed. Dec. 16, 2020– As reported in our mid-week edition, the sad and untimely passing of elected Corozal Bay area representative, David “Dido” Vega, created a vacant seat in the House of Representatives and has triggered a by-election.

The by-election must be held within three months of the date of the vacancy and no more than 21 days after the nomination of candidates.

Both major parties have held off on having any official discussions as yet regarding nominations, since Vega’s death is so recent, and those who knew him, as well as the general public, are still reeling from the tragic loss.

However, the People’s United Party’s Corozal Bay executive has met and pledged their support for the late area representative’s sister, Elvia Vega Samos.

Samos served as chair of the executive and has pledged to carry on her brother’s legacy. Like her brother, she, too, is a career educator and steadfast PUP supporter. The PUP has not yet publicly indicated whether it supports this nomination by the constituency’s executive.

 Up in the air is also the nomination of former Corozal Town mayor, Hilberto Campos, to be the UDP’s candidate in the by-elections. Former area representative, Pablo Marin, who was defeated by David Vega in the recent elections and who has announced his departure from electoral politics, has hinted at a possible endorsement of Campos. Campos was a four-time UDP mayor of Corozal Town.

While none of these persons have been officially nominated by their respective parties as yet, nominations are expected to be made shortly, since the by-election must be conducted sometime in March.
