Wilford Reque?a, 68, murdered on St. Matthew?s farm

GeneralWilford Reque?a, 68, murdered on St. Matthew?s farm

Reque?a, who has been the caretaker for the Rodney Bowen Farm for the past two years, was found locked up in his employer?s storeroom, situated at the lower flat of the two-storey wooden building, said police.

He was found lying faced up with a blue tarpaulin thrown over him. Found next to his body was his green beach-cruiser bicycle. His shirt, with what appeared to be bloodstains, was found near the steps of the house.

Reque?a was apparently struck in his head numerous times, then left to die in his own blood.

The post-mortem concluded today that he died of head injuries, because he suffered a fractured skull caused by a blunt object.

According to police, Bowen told them that when he visited the farm he did not see his caretaker anywhere around, but only saw the dogs.

He went upstairs to look for him and found a shirt with blood by the steps and saw that the house had been ransacked. There were words written on a partition of the wall in Spanish.

Police said that the words were formed on the walls with shaving cream spray, and they were unclear. The few words that were recognizable by police said, ?Bato mar??

Police said that they know of a gang that goes by the name of ?Batos Locos? in Honduras, and they are exploring the possibility of a link between the killer(s) and the gang.

According to police, Bowen reported Reque?a missing at about 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, right after his ghastly discovery at the farm, and police immediately began looking for him.

When police visited the farm, they were unable to open the storeroom. They said that they had to pry it open, because Bowden did not have his keys with him.

Their investigations revealed that some workers saw Reque?a around 3:00 on Tuesday evening, when he was chopping at the back of the yard, when the men left the farm.

Some men of Cotton Tree, a village three miles from St. Matthew?s, who were in the area, also told police that they had seen the caretaker at around 5:00 p.m. Police believe that this was the last time he was seen alive before his murder.

When Amandala visited St. Matthew?s, there was no one at the farm, hence we were unable to view the crime scene.

We were, however, able to speak with Reque?a?s only neighbor, Mrs. Marjorie Garbutt, an elderly woman, who told the newspaper what she experienced before police found the deceased?s body at his workplace.

According to Garbutt, on Tuesday evening at about 7:15, she heard Reque?a?s dogs barking for a long while, but did not pay it much attention. She thought that he had a visitor.

She recalled that about 7:50 p.m. when she went to the bathroom to take a bath, her dog began barking continuously. At this same time she began hearing Reque?a?s dogs barking again.

The barking of her dog now got her attention, so she looked out through her bathroom window, from where she could see Reque?a?s house, but she saw nothing.

About 8:15 p.m., after she was in her bedroom about to relax, her dog began barking once again in a disturbing manner, so she turned off her lamp and peeped through her bedroom window, from where she saw a light flashing around the neighborhood.

She believed that the person or persons were on the street and not in her yard, so she did not come out to see who it was.

She said she did not recall seeing anyone or hearing any vehicle come in or leave the area, but the news she received the following day of her next-door neighbor?s being found dead was shocking to her.

Garbutt said that each morning after 6:00, she would walk her dog in the front of the houses, but that morning when she did her routine walk, she did not see Reque?a as she would normally do.

She left her home again at about 7:00 a.m., heading in a private vehicle to Belize City, and still did not see him. She really thought nothing of it, supposing that he was at the back of the premises, she told us.

Marjorie, who has been living on her 75 acres for 7 years, said that it?s the first time something like this has occurred in her neighborhood.

She told the newspaper that many residents of Belize, who have their farm in the area, seldom visit the area. She said that although the incident has frightened her, she is not afraid of living in the area, but plans to be much more vigilant.

Police said that Reque?a?s death is similar to an incident that occurred at Mile 32 in October of 2004, which resulted in the death of another caretaker, Walter Usher, 72. An unknown person(s) murdered Usher while he was caretaker at a quarry behind JB?s Restaurant. Police said he was stabbed and left to die, also after being locked up.

According to police, they cannot say at this time if the two murders are related, as the men detained in Usher?s murder were released due to insufficient evidence.

Wilford Reque?a is originally from Gales Point Manatee, but is said to have relatives in Belmopan.

We were unable to reach any of his loved ones.
