Yes, I know

FeaturesYes, I know

Yes, I know who Dr. Harold Young is, and I like his idea of a national rainy-day fund. Like the one we could have created by saving a percentage of the BNE petroleum revenues.

May I add the idea of returning to villages and the food security and special social strengths their existence gave to Belize. But it’s not like I think this return will be easy. Government may need to invest a ton of money to revitalise old villages and create new ones. I don’t know how to do it. However, Menonites and Israelis are experts, I believe.

Like you, reader, I am sensing that the urgency of proposing good ideas to advance the wellbeing of all Belizeans is rushing upon us, as well as upon those who want to propose and deliver to the politicos and their assistants vote-getting solutions.

It’s amazing how similar our learning experiences are from generation to generation. Very often these days I am thrust back into my past, and I remember the old brilliant Jesuit professor who knew Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey like lines he was reading off a phone in his memory. Commenting on a line, he would pick out a word, his speech as smooth as silk, suggesting the beauty of an ancient Greek word, like sophrosune, harmony, wisdom.

However, one day he really shocked me and his class, declaring there is nothing new under the sun. What!!! I was shocked out of my socks. “You are kidding me! I see new things everyday!” Wisely, I said nothing…And Fr. smoothly moved on to the next adventure of Odysseus.

Everytime young folks and I argue about human rights I remember the above incident and I hold my breath, recalling how kind my professor of Ancient Greek was to me.

These days one of my favorite pastimes is to page through the volumes of the encyclopaedia, especially when I have had an argument with Mariette, my granddaughter. I look for personalities and events that prove, over and over again, how wise and learned the old prof was. I was looking for 18th century philosopher Jacques Rousseau to show her that the most popular idea today is as old as sin. In his writings he taught that humanity is really good, naturally good, but all the corruption has been caused by man’s laws and customs like marriage. The world would be better if man made love and moved on to another beloved.

May I ask the great philosopher — “So sex is for pleasure, pure and simple? What happens to the consequences of your loving… like offspring?”

The great man fathered five children, all of whom died in orphanages. Apparently, no one pointed out to Mons. Rosseau that for a human act to be good, both the doing and the result must be good and wholesome for self and others.

In paging through encyclopaedias, sometimes you will bump into facts that may help you have a new inspiration, even if you were expecting something else.

It’s been over half a century since man first set foot on the moon. I am told that there is no gravity there. What then will happen to our experience of pleasure… if you travel there sometime in the future to honeymoon with your brand new bride? What will physical pleasure be like? With no gravity! Will your experience change your mind about the importance of sensual pleasure?

At this juncture I better change gears.

To get to the point I really want to make, I must repeat what I’ve said before: I do not care who wins the next National Elections. Well, I really should not say “care”. For, hopefully it is going to be the most meaningful election we have ever held. Are we going to stand our ground and become what our Belize Constitution tells us we are, or are we going to elect our national hustlers to encourage international hustlers who come to us Greek-like, bearing corruptive, destructive gifts like the Equal Opportunities Bill!

Unfortunately, our fellow Central American country this week accepted the family- destructive law of gay marriage. They have chosen to follow the lead of European countries which are destroying themselves.

I will not campaign for any political party.

I shall campaign for the great, great ideas of our Belize Constitution. They are the Judeo-Christian principles that have created the greatest nations this world has ever seen. Indeed, regrettably, Western Civilization has been far from perfect.

May 7, 8, 9th marked the 75th Anniversary of the surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allies. A few days before the main actors in that horrific nightmare, Adolf Hitler and his propagandist Goebbels each put a gun to his head and blew out his brains. They were cowards propelled by the adulations of mobs fuelling their crazed egomania as they sought to create a Nazi Empire to last one thousand years (1000). It lasted from 1933 to 1945 — twelve (12) years!
I dread the thought, which I must still think, that the Liberal Agenda is leading us the way of Nazism, and along the already paved way to self-destruction that put poor fallible creatures into vehicles that have no brakes and no signal indicators. This is exactly what we are doing when we tell women that they have the Right to choose between life and death. I and you have always thought that function of judging was way, way above our payscale. We have always thought that the surest signal of what is fact, what is real, is the evidence of your eyes, ears, nose, skin and common sense!

To billions of people throughout the world, it has always seemed that true human rights are only real when they can be balanced by the Decalogue. Yes, we have rights. They are balanced by duties and responsibilities.
