Dr. Miguel A. Rosado, 48, dies after 52-day coma

GeneralDr. Miguel A. Rosado, 48, dies after 52-day coma

On Monday, October 16, Dr. Rosado was brought back to Belize City after spending a little over a month in a hospital in New Orleans.

Upon his return he received treatment at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, instead of the Universal Health Services, where he had been previously.

The reason for the change is not known at this time, but two days later he succumbed to his injuries.

At around 2:40 p.m., on August 28, 52 days ago, between Miles 11 and 12 on the Western Highway, Dr. Rosado was driving his Toyota, and had as passengers Michelle Lee Leslie, 31 (deceased because of injuries sustained in the accident); her husband, Leon Leslie, 24; and Marlon Kuylen, 41.

Reports are that on that fatal day, Dr. Rosado apparently lost control of his vehicle and ran off the highway. The vehicle overturned several times and as a result, Michelle Leslie was thrown out of the vehicle. She sustained severe head and body injuries and died on the spot.

Dr. Rosado was severely injured, and was rushed to the Universal Health Services, where a number of surgeries were performed. Unfortunately, his condition became worse, and his family flew him out of the country on September 11, to Tulane University Hospital in New Orleans.

There, he underwent several surgeries, but none were successful. Dr. Rosado was brought back to Belize on October 16, in the same condition as he had been in before, we were told.

Dr. Khalid Ghazy, Director of the Medical Services at the KHMH, told Amandala this evening that Dr. Rosado had shown no change from the day he had left Belize, to the time he returned.

Dr. Rosado was on life support for the entire time, breathing with a respirator. He had a hole on the brain, said Dr. Ghazy. A piece of bone had been taken out and the doctors in New Orleans had tried to cover the area, but were unsuccessful.

A post-mortem was conducted late this evening, but the result is pending.

Up until the time of his death, Dr. Rosado had been employed with the Universal Health Services, located on Blue Marlin and Chancellor Streets in the West Landivar area.

Originally from Altamira Village, Dr. Rosado worked as a pediatrician and a kidney specialist (nephrology). He had pursued a career in General Medicine at the San Carlos University in Guatemala. He then furthered his career in pediatrics in Mexico City, and later, studied nephrology, also in Mexico City.

Dr. Miguel Rosado is survived by three children ? two with his common-law-wife, Solandgel Martinez.
