“Only a miracle would let [Janay] walk again,” says physician

International“Only a miracle would let walk again,” says physician
This evening at the Belize Healthcare Partners Limited (BHPL) in Belize City a little girl continues to recover from injuries she should not have suffered.

Janay Moguel, 7, faces a tough road to healing. While her condition has been stabilized and she is responding to treatment, little progress has been made in recovering function and movement in her left arm and legs.

Neurosurgeon and attending physician Dr. Joel Cervantes updated Amandala on her condition in an interview at the BHPL this evening.

He told us that Janay has begun to feel some pain in her left arm, indicating nerve damage, but also possibly indicating an opportunity to recover movement there. But she has not regained any feeling in her legs in the week and two days since Janay was admitted.

Janay is currently recovering from a minor surgery on the spinal cord, and Dr. Cervantes hopes to discharge her early next week. But the road ahead will be challenging for her and her family.

It is Dr. Cervantes’ professional opinion – and that of some of his colleagues with whom he’s conferred – that Janay will probably not walk again, and that the most that can be done for her is physical therapy, almost definitely outside of Belize.

Rose Moguel, Janay’s mother, holds out hope for that miracle though. In a short conversation this evening not far from Janay’s room, she told us that the family continues to pray for her daughter’s recovery, and that they continue to accept donations to pay her bills and start the long road to recovery.

Amandala reminds the public of the account number, #10103315 at First Caribbean International Bank, and contact numbers: Rose at 605-5641, Marvin Moguel at 604-8121.
