BELIZE CITY, Mon. Feb. 15, 2016–Five people are suffering from gunshot wounds in different parts of their bodies, sustained during yet another weekend of gun violence that occurred in the city, and in Sandhill, in the Belize District, over the weekend of Thursday to Sunday, February 11 to 14.

There were 4 shootings: a 17-year-old youth was shot in the right upper back on Fabers Road; Raheem Bailey, 26, was shot in the chest and both thighs; Wilbert Welch was shot in the right shoulder; Davone Gillett, 25, also of Belize City, was shot in the neck and left shoulder; and Chelsea Young, 19, of Ladyville, Belize District, was shot in the left hand.

Police have since arrested two persons and detained three pending investigations.

All victims have been admitted to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) in a stable condition.

The weekend of violence began in Sandhill. At about 9:00 Thursday night, two friends were socializing in front Davone Gillett’s home in Sandhill when a dark-complexioned man who is known to them and who also lives in Sandhill, emerged from a bushy area opposite the house where the two friends were socializing and fired several times towards them.

Luckily, both friends escaped unhurt. Police say that the alleged gunman is well known to them.

Then, Raheem Jaheem Bailey, 19, was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after he was shot in the chest and the thigh at 6:50 Friday evening. Bailey was at his home along with a friend when a man, known to them, came riding on a bicycle on Allan Pitts Crescent from the direction of T Street, and upon reaching about 20 feet away from Bailey and his friend, the gunman pulled out a firearm from his front pants waist and fired several times at them, hitting Bailey multiple times.

Bailey’s friend escaped unhurt, while Bailey remains at the KHMH in a stable condition.

Police said that one man has been detained in connection with the shooting.

Then about an hour later, at about 8:00 that Friday evening, a 17-year-old boy was shot in the right upper back on Boots Crescent in the Port Loyola. The youth was walking by St. John Vianney Primary School from the direction of Fabers Road, heading towards Rivero Street Extension, when a man approached him from behind and fired several times at him.

The minor remains at the KHMH in a stable condition. Police have since arrested a 20-year-old man and charged him with “attempted murder, dangerous harm and use of deadly means of harm.” He is expected to be taken to court tomorrow to be arraigned on the offences.

Then at about 3:45 yesterday morning, Sunday, Wilbert Welch, 19, of Belize City, was walking on the sidewalk on Newtown Barracks when one of three men who were standing near a car shot him in the right shoulder.

Welch’s two friends, Davone Gillett and Chelsea Young, who were walking behind him, were also shot. All three persons were taken to the KHMH for treatment, and all were listed in a stable condition.
