Man shot by businessman Monday dies – now identified as Ernest Croft, 28, not James Young

GeneralMan shot by businessman Monday dies - now identified as Ernest Croft, 28, not James Young

The motive for the shooting is uncertain, said police, but they believe that an ?old beef? may have triggered the shooting, which occurred sometime after 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, in the BDF housing area of Ladyville.

Castillo, said police, was shot in the head, behind the ear.

A post-mortem conducted on Heston?s body by Dr. Mario Estradabran has certified that he died at 2:45 p.m. from exsanguinations due to internal and external bleeding as a result of neck and chest injuries from gunshot wounds.

Relatives said he died while being transported to the hospital.

Heston was the father of a 9-month-old baby girl, born from a relationship he had with a sister of the accused, Swazo. The couple?s four-year-old relationship ended about three months ago, said relatives.

Heston?s mother, Mrs. Enita Lambey Barrett, heard the news via a telephone call to Jackson, Florida, where she is presently studying.

Enita is scheduled to return to Belize tomorrow, Friday, to lay her son to rest. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, May 9, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, at 2:00 p.m.

Heston?s sister, Khadijah Castillo, 20, told Amandala today, however, that there was never really an old beef between her brother and the alleged shooter, Swazo.

Swazo never liked her brother for his sister from the start of their relationship, she said. It was no secret that he did not like her brother, she said, because in the past, he had thrown words at him whenever they would meet.

Her brother tried hard to ignore him, as he never wanted to cause trouble, she said.

When Amandala traveled to Ladyville on Tuesday, May 3, we spoke with a resident of the area, in whose yard the incident occurred.

According to Makeisha Swazo, 32, she was at her home in Ladyville when the deceased, Heston, who was visiting her and whom she knew very well, and a man became involved in an argument.

She said that she was talking with Heston as he stood at the entrance of her front door. Suddenly, she said she noticed that someone came riding into her yard on a bicycle. The man quickly approached Heston, slapping him in the face.

Heston seemed to have been caught off guard, said Makeisha, as when he was slapped, he fell to the ground.

Both men became involved in a heated argument that later escalated, she said.

She said that when the man slapped Heston, he asked him, ?Weh yuh duh meh sista mek e deh cry home, suh,? and they continued exchanging words.

Makeisha said she intervened when the two men?s argument seemed to have gotten out of control. But when she did that, it appeared that she was not getting across to any of them, as they continued to exchange words.

When she saw that the trouble became extremely serious, she grabbed the hand of her 4-year-old son, who was standing at the entrance of the door with her. As she turned from the door, she heard three shots ring out.

A bullet seemed to have only grazed Heston on the forehead, but the other shot caught him behind the ear, she said.

Heston stumbled across her yard and fell in front of a coconut tree.

For Makeisha, the experience was frightening. Her 12-year-old daughter and son, age 4, saw the incident, she said.

One of the shots went through her front screen door, burst through the back portion of her sofa chair and ricocheted into a nearby wall of the house. The holes show how close one of her family came to dying.

She recalled that about two weeks ago, the men got into a fist fight in front of her house, but thought that it had ended there.

Heston Remijio Castillo is the oldest child and only son of Enita Lambey Barrett.

She was a former Principal of Gwen Lizarraga High School, about two years ago before resigning to study fulltime.

The last time Enita saw her son alive was in March of 2004, when she visited Belize for a short period on an Easter break from her studies. She has been residing in Florida for almost two years, studying at the University of North Florida.

Heston, who was living in the Cayo District, just moved to Belize City about two weeks ago, said his sister.

Heston Castillo is survived by his mother, Enita; father, Charleston Castillo; daughter, Keosha Castillo; five sisters and one brother.

He celebrated his 22ndbirthday on April 9, three weeks ago.
