A 24-year-old man of Corozal has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until November 21, on charges of carnal knowledge after having sex with a girl, 14, who reportedly agreed to the act.

Angel Tun, 24, of Corozal, was taken to the Corozal Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he was remanded.

The minor and her mother, both of Corozal, went to the police and reported that in July, she agreed to have sex with Tun, whom she had known since childhood. At about 2:00 in the morning, the minor went out of her grandmother’s house, where she was sleeping, and went to Tun, who was waiting for her, and they went to his house, where he engaged her sexually. She told police that she went of her own free will.

Police said that the girl admits to having a “friendly” relationship with Tun since May of this year.

Police took the minor to the Corozal Hospital, where a doctor examined her and found that her hymen has been ruptured, and certified that she had been carnally known.

Police arrested Angel Tun on Saturday, September 14, and brought him to the Corozal Police Station, where he was charged with the offense. He was detained over the weekend and taken to court on Monday.

The police remind the public that even if a girl under the age of 16 agrees to engage in sexual intercourse, the act will still be classified as carnal knowledge, which is a crime that carries a jail term of 8 to 12 years in the case of a conviction, because the young female cannot consent to the act, since the age of consent is 16.
