A Guatemala man has been sent to prison to serve an 8-month sentence by the Belize City Magistrate’s Court after he was unable to pay two fines for two separate charges.
Edwin Moralez, 49, was charged for exposing himself in public and failure to comply with the conditions of his visitor’s permit.
The Immigration Department at the Guatemala-Belize Border, on Friday, issued him a permit for a 2-day stay in the Jewel with the stipulation that he was not to go beyond Belmopan.
Moralez was later busted in Ladyville, urinating on a fence. He told police that he was on his way to Orange Walk.
In court on Monday, Moralez was fined $500 for exposing himself, and $1,000 for violating his immigration permit. He was ordered to pay the fine of $500 forthwith, in default of which he’d have to serve 2 months in prison.
He was also ordered to pay the $1,000 fine forthwith, or spend 6 months in prison if he defaulted on payment. Again he was unable to pay the fine. The court ordered that the sentences be served consecutively, with the two-month sentence being served first. Morales was then taken away to begin to serve his 8-month jail sentence.
At the end of his jail sentence, Moralez will be deported back to his country, Guatemala.
According to police, in court Moralez said that he was going to Orange Walk to be employed as a cane cutter.
