Old court fines catch up with Sebastian “Sabe” Nunez

CrimeOld court fines catch up with Sebastian “Sabe” Nunez

Sebastian “Sabe” Nunez, well-known for his dancing in the Belize City Carnival Road March, was arraigned on a charge of theft at the Magistrate’s Court, but could not access the bail offered to him, because of outstanding court fines totaling over $1,800.

Nunez, who stated his occupation as a chef, pleaded not guilty to the charge. He is accused of the theft of two sacks of potatoes.

There was no objection by the court prosecutor to the granting of bail to him.

Magistrate Dale Cayetano, however, after offering him a $1,000 bail, plus one surety in the same amount, told him that before he could be released on bail, he had to pay all his outstanding fines – which he was unable to do.

Nunez was then taken into police custody.

Police are alleging that on Saturday, February 8, at the Michael Finnegan Market, Nunez stole two sacks of potatoes from Manuelito Pech.

According to police, they received information from their control room about a theft at the market.

When police went to the market, they met the complainant, Pech, who told them that he had parked his white delivery van in the area, leaving it open, while he was dropping off some onions to customers.

Pech told police that when he returned from his deliveries, he discovered the two sacks of potatoes missing. He learned that the potatoes had been taken to a green van that was parked on West Collet Canal.

Police located the green van, which had not moved from where it was parked. The owner of the van, Harley Chan, told police that he had just purchased the two sacks of potatoes for $100 from a man he knows as “Sabe.”
