Two dogs on Cemetery Lane killed by killer bees

GeneralTwo dogs on Cemetery Lane killed by killer bees

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Aug. 27, 2018– A swarm of Africanized bees, also known as “killer bees,” attacked and killed two dogs that were tied in a yard on Cemetery Lane at about 3:30 Saturday afternoon.

Members of the family who owned the dogs were in the house — no one was in the yard at the time when the bees swarmed and attacked the dogs.

Shortly after, the bees’ attack abated.

The family told us that the bees have been in the attic of the house for the past two months, passing through the eaves. They said they have called the Forestry Department in an effort to get them to send personnel to the house at 11 Cemetery Lane, to remove the bees, and are calling again on the department to come and remove the bees before they swarm and attack children who usually play in the yard.

A family member told us that due to the presence of the bees, their movement is restricted and they do not go on the back verandah, above which the hive is located.

This is not the first time that the bees have swarmed, they said. Last Sunday, the bees swarmed around and stung a number of persons,, but the attack was not as sustained and intense as the one that occurred on Saturday, August 25.
Incidentally, another dog was attacked and stung to death by killer bees last Tuesday at the corner of Mopan and Mahogany Streets.
