BELMOPAN, Mon. July 11, 2022
At the grand opening of the new National Bank of Belize in Belmopan, Hon. Christopher Coye, Minister of State for the Ministry of Finance, announced that the National Bank of Belize has acquired a SWIFT code for international money transfers
The National Bank of Belize, also known as “The People’s Bank,” is a financial institution that is fully owned by the Government of Belize. It opened its doors in September 2013 with the objective of providing affordable financing to members of the Belizean public.
In 2019, during the Belize Investment Forum in Miramar, Florida, Alvaro Alamina, general manager of the National Bank of Belize, had stated that the bank had secured correspondent banking relations, but didn’t have its own SWIFT code to do international money transfers.
While giving his remarks at the branch re-opening, Minister Coye confirmed publicly that the National Bank of Belize has acquired that SWIFT code which is necessary to transfer money internationally and that it has also established its first correspondent banking relationship.
“I am both pleased to learn and announce today another milestone of National Bank [of Belize]—that is, that the bank now has its own SWIFT code for international money transfers and has successfully obtained its first correspondent banking relationship with Intesa Sanpaolo, the world’s leading banking group headquartered in Italy. The bank explains it is also actively seeking to onboard a US correspondent bank, a move that will complement the strategic plans of the bank while providing top-tier financial services to its expanding customer base,” he said.
