The grueling swimming, cycling and running event will first start off with the participants swimming 580 yards in the fashion of a triangle, then they get out of the warm waters of the Caribbean to bike it for twenty miles, starting at Sandlighters Promenade unto Princess Margaret Drive, through the roundabout, crossing Belcan Bridge, up Central American Boulevard and then turning onto the Western Highway to Mile 9 and back.


On the return they will be required to run twice around the circular, also starting at Sandlighters Promenade unto Barrack Road, hitting Freetown Road to the roundabout into Princess Margaret Drive to Newtown Barracks.


Since its inception, the event has seen an increase in the number and spread of participants. In its first year, there were only 22 participants who competed and all 22 finished the race. By 2002, 41 tri-athletes participated. Last year the number grew to 63 participants who were willing to brave the sea, wind and heat to be called a triathlete.


Hubert ?Brother J? Johnson, the real ?Lionman?, who battled with a crocodile Friday, July 30, 2004, while doing his swim routine, will be defending his back-to-back title. Johnson won last year?s race in the Elites and Masters category in 1 hour 28 minutes 20 seconds, after taking it in 2002. Glen Jones was second, doing the race a mere 14 seconds behind the champ Johnson – 1 hour 28 minutes and 34 seconds, and Kenroy Gladden came in 3rdwith a time of 1 hour 31 minutes and 55 seconds.


Basketball phenom Bernard Felix of Wesley College was also a back-to-back winner last year, winning the Juniors? category in 2002 and 2003. Felix? time was 1 hour 27 minutes 26 seconds. Felix was followed by Arvides Rivas in second place registering a time of 1 hour 37 minutes 50 seconds, and Michael Godoy took third spot with a time of 1 hour 40 minutes 1 second.


In the Females? category, Sarah Schmidt ran a time of 1 hour 44 minutes 20 seconds to take first. One of the well known female cyclists of the Belize Cycling Association, Claudette Maheia, was second with a time of 1 hour 45 minutes 29 seconds, and Leila Peyrefitte was third, finishing the race in 2 hours 4 minutes 54 seconds.


Hubert Johnson topped the entire field in both the Elites and Masters category with Dr. Ramon Figueroa taking second spot in the Masters, finishing in 1 hour 32 minutes 36 seconds followed by Amir Gonzalez in third place with a time of 1 hour 44 minutes 52 seconds.
