Belmopan double murders – 1 shot and 1 stabbed to death

GeneralBelmopan double murders – 1 shot and 1 stabbed to death
Belmopan police have two murders on their hands tonight, as young Hispanic men of the outlying communities around the Capital were murdered on Thursday night and early this morning, Monday.

Police report that the body of Benito Alberto Mendoza, 23, a laborer of Roaring Creek, Cayo District, was found in the parking lot of the Junction Night Club at the junction of the Hummingbird Highway and Constitution Drive near the entrance to Belmopan, early on Friday morning, February 24.

Mendoza had suffered an apparent gunshot wound to the left side of his temple and was left to die in his own blood. He was buying food at the establishment when his assailant approached and fired once. Police working at the club saw a green Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck leaving the area and set chase, but the occupants managed to escape after shooting at the officers.

Early this morning, around 2:20, police found the body of a Hispanic man in the Maya Mopan football field around 2:20. He was lying on his back and the body displayed stab wounds to the chin, throat and chest.

A black ladies’ beach cruiser bicycle was found on the street nearby. The deceased was still in a red T-shirt/jersey, short pants and black slippers.

Police were not able to confirm if the man had been identified at press time. They have made no arrests in either case, and investigation continues.
