GeneralGuatemalan man killed in hit and run

SANTA CRUZ, Stann Creek District, Mon. June 21, 2021– Yesterday, a man was killed between Miles 20 and 21 on the Southern Highway in what appears to have been a hit-and-run accident. Reports are that 58-year-old Mario Dias, a Guatemalan national, was found motionless on the road near Santa Cruz.

Reports from the police are that a vehicle hit Dias from behind as he was making his way from his home village of Santa Cruz to Dangriga Town. He was reportedly left for dead on the highway.

Police have since detained a 58-year-old woman of Silk Grass Village, Rosa Martinez. She was served a notice of intended prosecution while police continue their investigation.

Reports are that massive head and body injuries were seen on the victim’s body. Police’s investigation later led them to Silk Grass, where they found a black Toyota pickup with dents in the front bumper and a shattered windshield.

The Police Department’s communications director, ASP Fritzroy Yearwood, told the media during a police press briefing that the damage observed on the vehicle is consistent with those usually seen on vehicles involved in road traffic accidents.
Police’s investigation continues.
