The controversy over the apparent acquiescence of a local fishing cooperative to the mining of our marine resources by two Jamaican companies for export to Jamaica continues.
On Tuesday afternoon, concerned citizens of Punta Gorda and Hopeville village, Toledo, witnessed workers unloading equipment apparently cleared through Customs on a property behind the San Antonio Road office of the Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE).
Environmentalist and political activist Wil Maheia told Amandala he was concerned that the Jamaicans appeared to be ignoring Government’s proclamation that for the time being one of the companies would not be getting a license, while the license of the other would be reviewed.
Today, a TIDE employee who was on the scene on Tuesday told us that one citizen approached the workers and started taking photographs. He was in turn told, “If you mi deh ina Jamaica, yuh mi a dead by now.”
The threatened individual retreated and reported the matter to TIDE personnel.
Maheia says he intends to keep a close eye on the Jamaicans’ moves.
