Pickup driver kills man on Northern Highway

HeadlinePickup driver kills man on Northern Highway

BELIZE CITY, Wed. Sept. 19, 2012

A Hispanic man who was walking on the Northern Highway in the Bally Gardens area is dead after he was knocked down by a pickup truck around 7:30 tonight.

The pickup’s driver said that they were travelling from Ladyville to Belize City when a man who was on the opposite side of the road suddenly ran across the road, right into the pickup. The impact threw him a short distance away from the truck, and he died almost immediately.

He reportedly had no identification on him.

The pickup’s left front bumper and hood were damaged, and its left headlamp and grill were broken.

Witnesses said that the man, who had a pint of “Red Top,” was intoxicated. An irate driver said that the man had just cut in front of her shortly before he ran across the road into the pickup.

Police processed the scene and the driver of the pickup was taken to the Traffic Department at the Racoon Street Police Station, where it is expected that a Notice of Intention for Prosecution will be issued, which is normal procedure.

The victim was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
