Editor AMANDALA
Sir,

Over the holidays I saw a documentary about the HIV/AIDS situation in a particularly hard hit village in India. Both the hero of the story and his young wife were HIV positive. The most powerful moment of the documentary was the wife’s decision to have a child. The hero did not agree, but in the heroine’s words, she would not be fulfilled as a woman if she didn’t have a child…despite the terrible risk that that child would be born with the disease.

My brothers and sisters, if you do not grasp what is happening here, you are asleep. Point blank, for me, if my parents have HIV they better not dare have me. Don’t even think about it! That is total disrespect.

Hey, I love the heroes of the documentary very much, and I would not be writing this piece if I thought it possible that they might read it. Praise the Lord, the child, delivered by C-section, came out negative. I pray that that family has every blessing under the sun.

It must be impressed upon our young people of child bearing age, the awesome responsibility they have to their children. They must stop this promiscuity. You will not have this flagrant behavior; the healthy entry of your child into this world will not depend on a plastic bag. No! Properly, in this era of the new plague, you will marry, or find your partner, and behave yuself.

And if our young people don’t understand? Then we must, by any means necessary, protect the next generation. In closing out, the editor of the Reporter pointed out recently that when the new Bond floats, nearly two dollars a day per capita will go to pay interest on our national debt. How many cents of that will go toward HIV/AIDS?
Clips:

Alcohol and drugs and AIDS. So, the prime target group for all these rubber promotions, in assorted colors and flavors, are too drunk or high to use them. Re-think.

Down Low and AIDS. Mr. Henry Gordon cited studies in his letter to the editor of the Amandala last week, that reaffirm anal sex as the prime distributor of the terrible virus.

Abusive relationships and AIDS. There is an ad about, warning women that the consequences of accepting battering might be more, a lot more than bruises and a black eye.

Educators and AIDS. News flashed last week that the Teachers Union had received a few Euros from foreign and were just now joining the fight against HIV/AIDS. Sorry, that’s how it came over.

Signed (Colin)
