SCA and SJC wins Central Division Secondary School volleyball championship

SportsSCA and SJC wins Central Division Secondary School volleyball championship

Trying very hard and consistently placing the ball at the back of the floor, ACC managed to bring the game back from 4-15 to a 10-15 deficit. However, Kera Henry of SCA went to the service line and gained a point that gave SCA the lead at 16-10.

After long rallies and consistent playing, the ACC girls gave SCA a great challenge bringing the game back quickly from 10-20 to an amazing 17-20.

The game was what we would refer to as ?hot?. Nervousness hit the stadium as the ACC girls were determined and were stopping almost everything including services, hits and tricks.

Once again there was constant banging on the bleachers as the crowd themselves were so into the game. Many parents were also at the game supporting their children. It has been quite a while since we have seen such excitement at the Civic Center to match this!

Nevertheless, the crowd got silent when one of ACC?s best players, Myrtel Bailey, had to exit the game due to breathing problems. This frustrated the ACC girls and five more minutes into the ball game, SCA was leading by a score of 23-18. At game point, SCA scored the final point. They won the first set 25-18.

The ACC team, which had number of injured players, did their best, but eventually bowed down to SCA in the second set. It was only eight minutes into the ball game and SCA was already leading 10-4.

In less than twelve minutes SCA won 25-12 over the ACC girls. SCA is for the 16th time the female Central Division defending champions.

In the male championship game round two, Saint John?s College (SJC) defeated E.P. Yorke High School for the second time.

In the first set, the game began with a power hit from SJC?s # 6 Victor Hernandez, who immediately gave them the lead 3-0.

E.P. Yorke?s # 2, Cleon Coleman, was the most dominant power hitter and blocker for his team but he could not match up to the combination of SJC?s Victor Hernandez and Orel Leslie who persistently tricked and hit the ball and gave them the lead 12-11. Ten more minutes into the ball game SJC won 25-19

In the second set, SJC outgunned E.P. Yorke in almost every category. In twelve minutes SJC would lead 20-11.

The effort of E.P. Yorke?s # 2 player, Cleon Coleman, and his teammates was not good enough to beat the SJC boys. However, they give it their best try. Congratulations to you all!

SJC won in two sets 25-19 and 25-11 and they are now the 2004 Central Division volleyball champions.

Along with St. Catherine Academy, they will represent the Central Division in the National Secondary School volleyball championships, which will be hosted by Toledo Community College in Punta Gorda, November 5 and 6.

In other volleyball news, the Southern Regional volleyball tournament will take place on October 23, 2004.

Congratulations to both teams for their success!
