But a check with the Lands Department in Belize City revealed that no lease could have been given through the proper channel, because there was no land to lease in the area?and the registered survey map of the area confirmed that.

We made calls to Belmopan to determine what the Ministry of Natural Resources knew about this apparent irregular activity.

Deputy Commissioner of Lands, Jaime Grajales, told Amandala last week Thursday that he would send a Lands Inspector to the area to ascertain what was happening. But when we called on Grajales yesterday, he told us that he had no information on the project, and that we should call the Lands Department in Belize City.

When we called Belize City Lands Department and asked to speak to the officer in charge of the department, we were told that the officer in charge is Javier Chan.

Chan told the newspaper that we would have to call Belmopan for the information that we were requesting. Asked if he knew anything about the sea filling in Buttonwood Bay, Chan replied that he knew, but he was not at liberty to give us the information. ?We have a public relations officer in Belmopan,? Chan informed.

After going through a ?back-and-forth? with Chan, explaining to him that Belmopan had suggested that we call his office, he promised to call Amandala back shortly.

About half an hour later Chan called to inform us that to obtain the information that we were seeking, we would have to write a letter to the Commissioner of Lands.

Why should we have to write a letter to Belmopan to find out why someone is filling in the sea to create lots that no one in authority seems to know about? One would think that the Commissioner of Lands would be the first to investigate and make public his findings.

Something fishy is going on in the sea at Buttonwood Bay. Amandala will write that letter.
