Suicide in Santa Clara, Corozal

GeneralSuicide in Santa Clara, Corozal

A family from Santa Clara in the Corozal District is devastated after a 25-year-old father was found dead with a rope around his neck by his common-law wife, Karina Pech, 23, in the living room of their house at about 6:30 Tuesday morning.

Adriano Samuel Ramos, 25, a laborer, was rushed to the Corozal Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival by Dr. Sajiah Jacobo and Dr. Ingrid Sansores. Ramos’ body was taken to the Corozal Morgue where a post-mortem was carried out to certify the cause of death.

There were no signs of violence on his body, and police have ruled out foul play. His twin brother, Rafael Auriano Ramos, 25, a tour guide of St. Matthews, Cayo District, identified his body to police.

Doctor Mario Estradabran, Police Coroner, conducted the post-mortem today, and at the conclusion of the autopsy, certified the cause of death to be asphyxiation by hanging due to suicide.

Police reports are that about 7:10 Tuesday morning, they went to the home of Karina Pech, a sales clerk of Santa Clara, and found Ramos’ naked body on a floral mattress, lying down facing upwards, in the middle of the living room of the house.

Police’s initial investigation revealed that Ramos had arrived home about 10:30 Monday night under the influence of alcohol and asked for food. Pech told police that he took a bath and returned nude, but was not satisfied with the food that she had prepared for him. She said that she left him alone and went to sleep with her daughter, 2.

She said that when she awoke at about 6:30 Tuesday morning and went to check on Ramos, she saw him in a kneeling position on the mattress with a nylon hammock rope that was tied in the center of the room, around his neck, and he was motionless.

Pech also noticed that her husband’s feet were mauve in color. She immediately alerted her parents and police were called. She then removed the hammock from her husband’s neck and put him in a lying position face up on the mattress.

Ramos’ family, however, is baffled as to what happened during that night. Ramos, they said, was not suffering from any illness.
