Team Typhoon sweeps controversial September Celebrations cycling race

SportsTeam Typhoon sweeps controversial September Celebrations cycling race

Early out, Team Typhoon used their larger numbers (10 riders) to dictate the early tempo of the race, sending the occasional rabbit out front, forcing the Northern Poultry Team Riders to have to work hard early to bring back the gaps. The field, however, stayed virtually intact heading to the turning point when the first controversy would erupt.

At the start of the race the officials announced that the race would turn at the Novelo?s Terminal in Corozal Town rather than at the Texaco Gas Station as originally announced, because of the conditions of the road near the gas station. This, however, was not properly communicated to the police and traffic officials. When the race reached the gas station the authorities directed the riders to turn, so only two riders actually went the additional distance to the bus terminal.

On the way back out of Corozal the attacks started, and by the time the race rolled back through Ranchito, the major move of the day would see a six-man break go clear of the field. This break was comprised of Arnides Rivas, Edwardo Babb, Hipolito Flores, Jr., and Nissan Arana, all of Team Typhoon, along with Berty Brown and Chris Reyes of Team Northern Poultry.Outnumbered by a two to one ratio, Berty and Chris were left to counter numerous attacks from the Team Typhoon riders.

Somewhere between Louisville and Santa Clara, Reyes was dropped. The same fate would eventually befall Brown and Arana entering Buena Vista, leaving a three-man strong break comprising Rivas, Babb and Flores, all of Team Typhoon.

The trio worked well together, sharing the pace and creating a sizeable gap over the chasers and main pelathon behind. Exiting Buena Vista, in what would yield the second controversy of the race due to allegations of supposed drafting behind a vehicle which went unnoticed by the officials, Arana attacked and was able to distance himself from Brown. Eventually with a good enough gap between himself and Brown, Arana?s teammates which made up the trio in front, waited for him and the group of four rode comfortably all the way in to finish.

By the time the race reached Orange Walk Town, the four-man break swept up all the station prizes and rode the lap around the by-pass unopposed. At the final entrance to Town, Arana was again dropped from the breakaway, leaving the trio of Rivas, Babb and Flores all alone once again.

Coming into the finish, in a show of superb team unity, the three riders locked arms around each other?s shoulders and crossed the finish line together, leaving the officials with the daunting task of picking a winner.

In the end it was Team Typhoon sweeping the top 4 positions with Arnides Rivas taking first and a prize of $1,000; Edwardo Babb ? second with a prize of $500; Hipolito Flores, Jr., in third collecting $300. Nissan Arana , also of Team Typhoon, came in about a 1/2 minute behind in fourth place ($100). Berty Brown of Team Northern Poultry finished in fifth place ($50) just over a minute and 1/2 behind the fourth place finisher.

Only 14 of the 22 cyclists were able to complete the grueling journey. Amir Riveroll (15 years) was the youngest cyclist to complete the race and received a $25 Gift Certificate from Lee?s Chinese Restaurant.
