With Adventures having dropped out of the second round of competition, as confirmed by League officials, the Belize Bank Super League regular season will definitely end this week, and the stage will be set for commencement of the playoffs next weekend as planned.
On Saturday night, February 16, Texmar Boys bombed Roots F.C. by a 6-1 score at the MCC in Belize City, while Belmopan Bandits and Alpha Barcelona were playing to a 4-4 draw at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan. (At 15 goals in regular season, 6 more than his nearest rival, Texmar’s Ashley Torres is assured of the Most Goals title in this inaugural Super League semipro season.)
Last night’s back-match encounters were therefore academic, except to determine the final regular season standings, as, with all teams unaffected by a second round encounter with Adventures, Alpha would not be able, even with a victory, to break into the playoff ranks consisting of Texmar Boys, Benque D.C. United, Forever Strong Kraal Road and Estrellas F.C.
Nevertheless, Alpha Barcelona rolled into the City all business last night to finish their first Super League season with a bang, and that they did, to the disappointment of Roots fans. After a scoreless first half, the superior passing and teamwork paid off for the visitors, with four goals coming in quick succession. Burning cotton for Alpha were Jose Cawich at the 57th and 69th minute, Saul Morales at the 67th and Harvey Cruz at the 79th.
Meanwhile, at the Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo, two more teams were completing their regular season schedule, as home standing Benque D.C. United, who have already clinched a playoff spot, proved their worth against visiting Belmopan Bandits to the tune of 2 goals to nil. Both Benque goals came in the first half, from Habib Cano at the 35th minute and Albert Eiley at the 42nd.
One game remains to complete the Super League regular season, and that takes place on Saturday night at the MCC in Belize City, as Forever Strong Kraal Road hosts Estrellas F.C. in a “bragging rights” game that will not affect the playoffs, but will determine the final standings at the end of regular season competition. Kraal Road won in their first regular season meeting, 1-nil, in Punta Gorda. Estrellas will no doubt be looking to return the courtesy on Saturday.
