$15,800 stolen from filing cabinet in Fire Chief’s office

Crime$15,800 stolen from filing cabinet in Fire Chief’s office
Officials from the National Fire Service were unresponsive to our calls, but police say $15,800 was apparently taken from the filing cabinet inside the office of the Fire Chief at the Service’s headquarters on Cleghorn Street.

Current Acting Fire Chief, Ted Smith, 45, reported the theft. Smith estimated the theft to have taken place between March 23 and April 5. The money was in a manila envelope, the property of the Government of Belize, and was to have been used for financing the training of new recruits to the Fire Service.

The training was to have started later this month. Police are investigating.
