Gina is now 19 years old and her liver is still not functioning properly. In fact, it has gotten worse. On June 2, 2006, she had to undergo surgery to stabilize the hemorrhaging in her liver. She is currently on medication to ease the daily pains and discomfort. She is scheduled to travel to the United States to undergo a liver transplant in the very near future.

Last Thursday July 13, Gina appeared on KREM TV asking the general public for assistance. Gina is in dire need of US$30,000 to finance the cost of the procedure and some very expensive medication.

The Belize City Softball Federation and the Rural Division have taken the initiative to spearhead a fund raising drive to assist Gina and her family with the expenses. The Federation had previously arranged for El Salvador?s national team to visit Belize for some exhibition games that were to be played in the Corozal District. Figuratively speaking, there is no boundary in sports, and having learnt about Gina?s plight and the Federation?s efforts, the Salvador National Softball Selection graciously agreed to the change in venue and confirmed their participation the special quadrangular tournament scheduled for this Sunday, July 23, in Gina?s home village of Double Head Cabbage.

The Salvador national team will compete with the Belize national team, namely BTL and two all star selections comprised of players from Belize Rural. Notably, Gina?s sister, Mary Flowers, currently stars for BTL.

Apart from this humanitarian act, the Belize national team and the national selection from El Salvador will use this opportunity to feel each other out. The Belize national selection is scheduled to travel to El Salvador on August 2 to compete in an international tournament.

This Sunday all softball fans are invited for a fun-filled and exciting day of softball. Lots of delicious food and drinks will be on sale. All proceeds will be used to assist Gina Flowers with her medical expenses. The tournament is scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m.

Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so at any of the branch offices of First Caribbean International Bank. Deposit to account #1-006-5630. For additional information please contact Ms. Joyce Flowers at 209-2084 or 209-2081.
