Football rumblings, pro-tem district committees push for new National Association to replace FFB

SportsFootball rumblings, pro-tem district committees push for new National Association to replace FFB
The Ministry of Sports’ Investigation Committee into the FFB has not released its report yet, but concerned individuals in the various football districts of Belize have gone ahead and formed themselves into pro-tem committees as the first step in a process whose objective is to reorganize football administration in Belize under a new National Association with a democratically elected executive.

It is an under-statement that the FFB leadership has long lost the confidence and support of the “football family” all across Belize. And it has proven impossible to remove them democratically, as democracy is not the way of this FFB gang.

Earlier this week, our sports desk was leaked copies of letters from various district pro-tem committees, dated May 9 to May 10, addressed to “Mr. Patrick Henry, Executive Director of Sports, National Sports Council.” The letters, from pro-tem committees of the Cayo, Belize, Corozal, Stann Creek, Orange Walk and Toledo districts, all voice the sentiment of extreme dissatisfaction with the FFB, and expressed the desire for the Sports Council to assist them in the formation of their individual District Associations “with a view to forming a new National Association.”

Incidentally, the very active Belmopan (football district) association, which in February of 2009 was denied the use of the name “Belmopan Football Association” by the FFB President, who reportedly possesses the copyright for the name, has since been operating under the title of BNFA/Belmopan. Its chairman, Luis Pena, says they are fully on board with the initiative to form a new National Association.

A meeting is reportedly planned for this Saturday to further discuss and formulate their plans going forward.
