CrimeBefore he was remanded, man tells Magistrate, “I got a job, I no into jail and thing”

A Belize City man who has been accused of attempted murder and who was remanded to prison today told the Chief Magistrate that he was only trying to part a fight that broke out at his home, located on Doris Brooks Street.

“I got a job and thing. I no into fight and thing and the jail life,” said Sherman Rodney, 22, after he was read two indictable charges by Chief Magistrate Ann Marie Smith, and a cursory glance at the law was required to determine if he should be remanded to prison for a charge of attempted murder, for which a firearm was not used.

Rodney continued, speaking out of turn, in an effort to avoid being remanded to the Central Prison, “I tried to part a fight that was happening at my house.”

But the Chief Magistrate was told by the court’s prosecutor that attempted murder is one of the offences listed on the schedule of the amended law for which bail cannot be offered at the Magistrate’s Court level, so she remanded Rodney to prison until his adjournment date of June 18.

Police charged Rodney with “attempted murder “and “dangerous harm” against Lloyd Augustus for the April 3 incident that allegedly happened at his house, at 6579 Doris Brooks Street, in the Port Loyola area.

Apart from the two indictable offences, Rodney also has another case before the Magistrate’s Court. On February 25, 2014, police charged him with “escape from lawful custody,” and he has been released on bail for that charge.
