UWI University Singers: “From Mozart to Marley”

GeneralUWI University Singers: “From Mozart to Marley”
The University Singers of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, paid a visit to Belize this past weekend and performed at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts in Belize City to a full house.

The UWI University Singers previously visited Cancun and Chetumal in Mexico before coming to Belize for an engagement that is part of the celebration of Belize’s 30th anniversary of independence and organized by the UWI Open Campus, Belize, in conjunction with the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), the offices of the Governor General and Prime Minister of Belize, and the Mexican Embassy in Belize.

The 2-hour concert was titled “From Mozart to Marley,” and as advertised, the troupe covered a wide range of musical genres and tastes – classical, gospel, folk, world music and reggae.

Among the favorites were the Red Rat composition “No Live No Weh” and a pair of folk songs, “Dalfus Gone” and Lord Kitchener’s amusing “Love in de Cemetery”. The singers also showed off their acting skills, using some impressive gestures and other mobility to keep the audience interested.

After a rousing finale with Bob Marley’s classics, “No Woman No Cry” and “One Love,” the troup traveled west to Belmopan for a date at the George Price Center, followed by a training session today in the City before their departure.
