Less than a month after a Belizean woman, 34, was arrested for stealing rum and clothes at a shopping mall in Chetumal, two women of Guinea Grass have been charged with theft for attempting to steal items from the Corozal Free Zone. The incident occurred at about 5:30 Saturday evening at the Ueta Store.
Melanie Chable, 21, told Corozal police that about 5:30 Saturday evening, she was working at the store in the Corozal Free Zone when three women entered the store with large purses, and walked to the liquor section.
After about 15 minutes, one of the women came to the counter and paid for two bottles of Absolute vodka and left the store, leaving behind the other two women – Irma Lopez, 27, a Belizean domestic of Guinea Grass, Orange Walk District, and Lourdes Lopez, 30, also a Belizean domestic of Guinea Grass.
About 15 minutes later, the two women tried to leave the store without paying for the items they had taken. Chable and a female store attendant approached and searched the women’s purses. In one of the bags they found (2) liters of Grey Goose vodka valued at $128, and in the other purse they found (1) liter of Zacapa Ron, valued at $160. The combined value of the items the women were trying to smuggle out the store was $288.
The two women were later arrested and charged with theft.
