BELIZE CITY, Fri. Apr. 26, 2024

Glenfield Dennison, who was elected in February to serve as the senator who will be representing the country’s unions in the National Assembly, following the departure of Elena Smith, is preparing to be sworn in.

Dennison is expected to take his oath before the next sitting of the Special Senate Select Committee, scheduled for May 5.

Dennison, 39, was officially elected to succeed Elena Smith after she submitted her resignation to the National Assembly, effective April 1.

He narrowly defeated Marvin Mora by a margin of 26 to 25 in elections held by the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) in Belmopan.

The Governor General of Belize, Dame Froyla Tzalam, has approved Dennison’s appointment following a recommendation from the president of the NTUCB, Luke Martinez; and last week, he received his instrument of appointment and was briefed by the Special Select Senate Committee on Monday.

Before his senatorial appointment, Dennison was an active vice-chair of the People’s Constitution Commission (PCC) and has retained his role as a prosecutor in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

His new role as a senator necessitated his resignation from the PCC to avoid any potential conflicts of interest.

Dennison expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him by the NTUCB, telling Amandala following the election, “I am humbled to have been elected as the next senator for the NTUCB.”

The oath of office will be administered by Carolyn Trench-Sandiford, President of the Senate.
