Message from BAAA President Ian Gray

SportsMessage from BAAA President Ian Gray
BAAA 2011 in Review

The marked success in athletics for 2011 came from the joint effort of the coaches, athletes, supporters, sponsors, the Belize Amateur Athletic Association (BAAA) Executive and stakeholders.

Not all the goals and aspirations set down by the Executive in 2010 came to fruition. As a result, those remaining goals and objectives will be carried over into the New Year.

The hard work and dedication of the athletes and coaches paid major dividends in the amount of medals, national records and personal records that were established during 2011. Belize has become a force in athletics to be reckoned with. The contributions of parents, guardians and the schools are tremendous and immeasurable. For the first time in recent history, our women finished 3rd as a team at the Central American Championships with 5 gold medals.

World acclaim was granted to Belize for our hard work and accomplishments on the Junior and Senior levels, both regionally and internationally.

BAAA 2012 Prospects

Based on recent past performances, a core of young athletes is being groomed for international representation for 2012 and beyond. Those very athletes will form part of our 2014 Junior Olympics selection and also a part of Belize’s 2016 Olympic delegation to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

There are some areas in which Belize has very limited representation or no representation at all at the Junior and Senior levels. For instance, middle distance and race walking along with some field events are in dire need of participants. It is hoped that club coaches will also recognize that there is an urgent need to fill the gaps in the various disciplines.

The year 2012 has been designated the Year of the Clubs. The key objective is to encourage individuals to form clubs nationwide, which in turn would incorporate the local business communities to invest in their own areas.

On behalf of the executive, athletes, coaches and all involved with the BAAA, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all those who made 2011 a success. That level of success allowed Belize to be voted the most improved country in NACAC. We look forward to working with you in 2012.
